As a cyber security leader, I feel strongly about social issues related to human rights in the context of privacy, data protection and safe use of technology. I believe technology can be an enabler but also a potential cause of harm that needs to be considered.
I started volunteering with the CyberPeace Institute to leverage my cyber and technology skills to empower not-for-profit organisations to combat cyber threats and protect the communities they serve.
Charities are often targeted by cyber attacks because they handle sensitive information from vulnerable communities and manage substantial funds. Access to cybersecurity talent to combat this is a major challenge for not-for-profit organisations due to limited budgets.
CyberPeace Institute’s Builders program was created to address this issue by matching NGOs and cybersecurity professionals who immerse themselves in the humanitarian context, taking into account the unique risks, needs, and capacities of the affected population, as well as the local legal and cultural frameworks.
Participating in this program is an opportunity to give back and collaborate with humanitarian organisations to empower local communities to manage their own cybersecurity risks and adapt interventions to their specific needs.
